Scope of care

What I can treat online — and what I can't

I am Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera, a GP licensed in Spain. I see patients by video for urgent, non-emergency care. Video works well when the diagnosis rests mainly on what you tell me, your history and what I can see on camera or in photos. Some problems need hands-on care, a test or an emergency team instead. This page lists both, so you can pick the right route before you book. In an emergency, call 112.

What I can treat by video

Each link opens a page about that condition: common symptoms, what can be done by video, and the warning signs that mean you need to be seen in person.

Common infections

Sore throat, sinus, ear and chest infections, urine infections and other common infections, when you feel unwell but stable.

Skin, allergies and eyes

Skin problems and allergies that can be judged from your story and from photos or video, plus common eyelid and eye irritation. An eye problem with loss of vision needs to be seen in person.

Travel and holiday health

Advice before a trip, and problems that start while you are away, such as stomach upsets, sunburn, bites, heat and jet lag.

Stomach, digestion and pain

Heartburn, reflux, headaches, and back or joint pain that can be judged from your story. Severe or worsening tummy pain needs an exam in person.

Long-term conditions and repeat prescriptions

A review of your treatment and repeat prescriptions for stable conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, thyroid disease or high cholesterol.

Weight and metabolic health

An assessment and an evidence-based plan. Medicines only where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation.

Mental health and sleep

Anxiety, low mood and sleep problems, talked through in a calm, private visit. Controlled medicines are not prescribed online (see below).

Sexual health

A private, confidential visit.

Also by video

Children and pregnancy

Children

I also see children. A parent or guardian should be with the child during the video call. The emergency signs below apply to children too: if you see one, call 112.

Pregnancy and after birth

You can book for a health concern while you are pregnant or after your baby is born. A video visit does not replace the check-ups and scans of your midwife or obstetric team. Heavy bleeding or severe pain in pregnancy is an emergency: call 112.

Not suitable for an online visit

If any of these apply, please do not book a video visit. Use the route shown instead.

  • Emergencies: call 112

Chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe bleeding, loss of consciousness, a serious injury or any life-threatening symptom. Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.

  • Problems that need an exam or a test first

Severe or worsening tummy pain, an injury that may need stitches or an X-ray, an eye problem with loss of vision, or anything that needs an ECG, a scan or urgent blood tests now. Complex conditions that need a hospital team also need in-person care.

When to go to the ER and when to use an online doctor
  • Controlled medicines

I do not prescribe controlled medicines online. That means no benzodiazepines, no Z-drug sleeping tablets, no opioids and no stimulants. A specialist or an in-person service is the right route for those.

  • Driving and firearms licence certificates

In Spain, only authorised in-person centres (CRC) can issue these. The same goes for statutory sick leave (baja médica): only the public health system or a mutua can issue it. I can give you a note confirming the visit.

About prescriptions

A prescription is never promised in advance. It is issued only if clinically indicated after a video assessment, as a private electronic prescription under Spanish law. Antibiotics are prescribed only when they are needed.

If video is not enough

I will tell you clearly, during the visit, if you need to be seen in person. I explain which service to use (your health centre, a private clinic, urgencias or 112), how soon, and what to tell them. The written report from the visit can be shown to the next doctor. A visit that ends with "you need to be examined today" has done its job.

Common questions about what I treat

How do I know if my problem can be treated by video?

Video suits problems where the diagnosis rests mainly on what you tell me, your history and what I can see on camera or in photos. If your problem needs an exam, a test or emergency care, I will tell you during the visit and explain where to go.

Do you see children and pregnant women?

Yes. Children and pregnancy are in scope. A parent or guardian should be with a child during the call. A video visit does not replace pregnancy check-ups or scans. In an emergency, for a child or in pregnancy, call 112.

Can I get sleeping tablets or strong painkillers online?

Not controlled ones. I do not prescribe benzodiazepines, Z-drug sleeping tablets, opioids or stimulants online. For those, a specialist or an in-person service is the right route. Other medicines are prescribed only if clinically indicated after a video assessment.

Can you do my driving licence or gun licence medical?

No. In Spain, only authorised in-person centres (CRC) can issue those. Many other certificates for work, study or travel can be issued after an assessment, but acceptance always depends on the body that asks for them.

Do I need a Spanish health card?

No. It is private care, so you do not need a Spanish health card or to be registered at a health centre.
