Anaemia and Low B12, Iron or Vitamin D: Online GP Review

Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera

Licence No. 484814280 · Urgent, non-emergency care

Common Symptoms

Low iron, vitamin B12, folate or vitamin D are common, and the signs are easy to miss. You may notice:

  • Tiredness that does not improve with rest
  • Pale skin, or feeling out of breath or a racing heart on effort
  • Pins and needles, numbness or unsteadiness (low B12)
  • A sore, red tongue or mouth ulcers
  • Hair shedding or brittle nails
  • Aching bones or weak muscles (low vitamin D)

Feeling tired all the time is wearing, and it is easy to be told it is just stress. Simple blood tests often find a clear, treatable cause, and finding why the level is low matters as much as the number.

How We Treat It

In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo reviews your symptoms, diet, medicines and any results you already have. Care may include:

  • Reading your full blood count, ferritin, B12, folate and vitamin D results with you
  • Requesting blood tests at a lab near you when needed
  • Looking for the cause: diet, heavy periods, absorption problems, or medicines such as metformin or stomach-acid tablets
  • Advice on food sources and supplements
  • Prescription treatment where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation
  • A follow-up to check that levels recover, and referral when needed

Some causes, such as bleeding from the gut, need in-person tests. Injections are given at a clinic or health centre, not by video. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law.

Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Anaemia and Low B12, Iron or Vitamin D: Online GP Review

During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.

Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law

When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.

Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement

After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.

Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation

Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.

Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary

Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.

When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care

Get urgent in-person care, or call 112, if you have:

  • Black or bloody stools, or vomiting blood
  • Chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness
  • Numbness, weakness or difficulty walking that gets quickly worse
  • Very heavy bleeding
  • Weight loss you cannot explain, with tiredness

Frequently asked questions

What are the symptoms of low vitamin B12?

Tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness, a sore tongue, pins and needles, poor memory and low mood. Low B12 is more common with a vegan diet, over 60, with some stomach conditions and with long-term metformin or stomach-acid tablets. Nerve symptoms need prompt treatment.

What is folic acid (vitamin B9) for?

Folate helps the body make red blood cells and DNA. A lack of it causes anaemia with large red cells. Folic acid is also recommended before and in early pregnancy. Low folate and low B12 can look alike, so both are checked before treatment.

What is megaloblastic anaemia?

It is anaemia in which red blood cells are larger than normal (a high MCV on the blood count), usually from a lack of B12 or folate. The cause decides the treatment.

Should I take magnesium for tiredness?

Low magnesium is uncommon in healthy people who eat a normal diet. It is more likely with long-lasting diarrhoea, heavy drinking, some water tablets or long-term stomach-acid tablets. Ask before taking supplements, especially if you have kidney disease.

Can you request the blood tests for me?

Yes, when they are clinically indicated. You have the sample taken at a private lab near you, and the results are reviewed with you afterwards.
