Common Symptoms
Pregnancy brings many questions, especially far from home or before your first midwife visit. People often book about:
- Early pregnancy symptoms, or a positive test and what to do next
- Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy
- Which medicines are safe for a cold, pain or allergies
- Urine infection symptoms
- Heartburn, constipation or aches
- Flying or travelling while pregnant
Questions in pregnancy can feel urgent, and it is hard to know what is normal. A calm review helps you know what is safe to do now, and when you need to be seen in person.
You don't have to figure this out alone
Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera is an independent, bilingual GP licensed in Spain. Book a 15-minute video consultation in English or Spanish for €50, with a private electronic prescription issued under Spanish law when clinically appropriate.
How We Treat It
In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo asks how many weeks pregnant you are, about your symptoms, your medicines and your health history. Care may include:
- Advice on early pregnancy symptoms and the next steps in Spain, such as booking with a midwife (matrona) or obstetrician
- Which medicines are considered safe in pregnancy, checked against your situation
- A plan for nausea, heartburn or constipation
- Assessment of urine infection symptoms, with a urine test when needed
- Advice on folic acid and other supplements
- Prescription treatment where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation
- A fit-to-fly letter when appropriate, according to your airline's rules
Online advice does not replace your antenatal check-ups, scans or examinations with your midwife or obstetrician. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care.
Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Pregnancy Questions
During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.
Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law
When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.
Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement
After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.
Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation
Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.
Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary
Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.
When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care
Call 112 or go to the maternity emergency department if you have:
- Vaginal bleeding, or fluid leaking from the vagina
- Severe or one-sided tummy pain, especially in early pregnancy
- A severe headache, blurred vision or sudden swelling of the face or hands
- Fewer baby movements than usual, later in pregnancy
- Fever, fainting, or vomiting so severe that you cannot keep fluids down
Frequently asked questions
What are the first symptoms of pregnancy?
A missed period is the most common first sign. Others are tender breasts, tiredness, nausea, passing urine more often, and mild cramps or light spotting around the time of the period. A home test is reliable from the first day of a missed period.
Is belly button pain normal in pregnancy?
Often, yes. As the womb grows, the skin and muscles around the belly button stretch and the navel can push outwards. Pain that is severe, constant or on one side, or that comes with fever, vomiting or bleeding, needs a prompt check.
Which painkiller can I take while pregnant?
Paracetamol is generally the first choice in pregnancy, used for the shortest time that helps. Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen are usually avoided, especially in the second half of pregnancy. Check any medicine with a doctor or pharmacist first.
Do I need folic acid?
Yes. Folic acid is recommended before conception and in the first weeks of pregnancy, to lower the risk of spina bifida and similar conditions. Some women need a higher amount; the doctor will tell you if that applies to you.
Can I fly while pregnant?
Most airlines accept a healthy pregnancy until about 36 weeks (32 weeks with twins), and many ask for a doctor's letter from 28 weeks. Rules vary by airline, so check yours before booking.
How does pregnancy care work in Spain?
In the public system, a midwife (matrona) at your centro de salud leads your care, with scans and checks at the hospital. Privately, an obstetrician follows you. An online GP can help with questions in between, but does not replace those visits.
