Quick answer
A Spanish pharmacy cannot give you a prescription-only medicine without a valid prescription, and prescriptions from outside the EU are not reliably accepted. Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera, a GP licensed in Spain, can review proof of your usual treatment by video and, only if it is clinically appropriate, issue a private e-prescription that any pharmacy in Spain can dispense.
Common Symptoms
It happens to many travellers: a lost suitcase, a pill box left at home, or a holiday that lasts longer than planned. People usually contact us because they have:
- Forgotten their regular tablets at home
- Lost medicines in delayed or stolen luggage
- Run out because a trip was extended
- A prescription from the UK, the US or another non-EU country that a pharmacy will not accept
- A medicine whose name they cannot find in Spain
- Missed doses and are unsure what to do now
- An inhaler, contraceptive pill or other routine medicine that has run out
Running out of a medicine you take every day is stressful, and stopping some treatments suddenly can make you unwell. A safe replacement takes more than showing an empty box: the doctor needs to confirm the medicine, its strength and why you take it, and check that it is still right for you. With a photo of the box or your prescription, that check can usually be done by video.
You don't have to figure this out alone
Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera is an independent, bilingual GP licensed in Spain. Book a 15-minute video consultation in English or Spanish for €50, with a private electronic prescription issued under Spanish law when clinically appropriate.
How We Treat It
Have to hand anything that shows your usual treatment: the box or label, a photo of your prescription, your pharmacy record or app, or a letter from your doctor. The doctor confirms the active ingredient, strength and how you take it, and asks about allergies, other medicines and how you feel. The visit can lead to:
- A private electronic prescription valid at any Spanish pharmacy, when continuing the medicine is clinically appropriate
- The Spanish name of your medicine (Spain prescribes by active ingredient), and a suitable equivalent if your brand is not sold here
- Advice on missed doses: what to do now and what not to double up
- Referral to in-person care for medicines that cannot be safely continued without tests or a specialist
- A medical report and an itemised invoice for your travel insurer
Controlled medicines, such as strong opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines, sleeping pills and ADHD stimulants, are never prescribed online. A prescription is never automatic: it is issued only where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation. Private prescriptions are paid in full at the pharmacy.
Can a pharmacy in Spain give you your medicine without a prescription?
Not if it is a prescription-only medicine. Spanish pharmacies must see a valid prescription, and an empty box from home does not count. Prescriptions from other EU countries are recognised under Spanish law if they contain the required details.
For UK visitors, GOV.UK says a UK prescription can be used in Spain, but the Spanish rules that guarantee recognition cover EU prescriptions only. In practice the pharmacist decides, and many decline; NHS electronic prescriptions and screenshots cannot be dispensed. Prescriptions from the US and other non-EU countries are not valid in Spanish pharmacies.
Which medicines are urgent if you run out?
Some medicines should not be stopped even for a day or two. They include insulin, epilepsy medicines, blood thinners, Parkinson's medicines, steroid tablets taken long term, transplant and HIV medicines, and reliever inhalers for asthma. If you cannot get these in time, go to a hospital emergency department (urgencias) or call 112 if you feel unwell.
If you have missed contraceptive pills, you may need emergency contraception. In Spain the morning-after pill (levonorgestrel) is sold in pharmacies without a prescription; a doctor can advise on the best option and timing.
What should you do in the first hour?
Check your hand luggage, car and accommodation again, and contact the airline if your bag is delayed. Do not take extra doses to catch up unless a doctor or the leaflet says so. Gather proof of your treatment: a photo of the box, your pharmacy record, a patient app or a letter. Know the active ingredient and strength.
Then check your travel insurance, which may cover a replacement, and book an appointment early rather than waiting until symptoms start.
Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Lost or Forgotten Medication
During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.
Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law
When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.
Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement
After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.
Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation
Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.
Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary
Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.
When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care
Go to urgencias or call 112 if missing your medicine has made you unwell, for example:
- Chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or severe breathlessness
- An asthma attack that your reliever cannot control, or no reliever inhaler at all
- A seizure, or warning signs of one if you take epilepsy medicine
- Very high blood sugar with vomiting, deep breathing or confusion
- Very high blood pressure with a severe headache, vision changes or weakness
- Severe withdrawal symptoms after stopping a medicine suddenly
- Vomiting, dizziness or collapse if you take long-term steroid tablets
Frequently asked questions
I forgot my medication on holiday in Spain. What should I do?
Find proof of what you take (a photo of the box, your prescription or a pharmacy app) and book a video appointment with a doctor licensed in Spain. If continuing the medicine is clinically appropriate, you receive a private e-prescription you can use at any Spanish pharmacy. Urgent medicines such as insulin need urgencias if you cannot get them in time.
Can I use my UK or US prescription at a Spanish pharmacy?
A US prescription is not valid in Spain. A UK paper prescription is accepted only at the pharmacist's discretion, and NHS electronic prescriptions cannot be used. Prescriptions from EU countries are recognised. A Spanish e-prescription after a medical review is the reliable route.
What proof of my medication do I need?
Anything that shows the medicine, its strength and that it was prescribed to you: the box or label, a prescription or repeat slip, a pharmacy record, a patient app screenshot, or a letter from your doctor. The more detail, the safer and quicker the review.
Can every medicine be replaced online?
No. Controlled medicines are never prescribed online, and some treatments need blood tests, an examination or a specialist before they can be continued. The doctor will tell you clearly where to go in those cases.
My medicine has a different name in Spain. Is that a problem?
Usually not. Brand names differ between countries, but the active ingredient is the same. Spanish prescriptions use the active ingredient, and the doctor checks the strength so the pharmacy gives you the right product.
Will my travel insurance pay for the appointment?
Many travel policies reimburse a private doctor's visit abroad. You receive a medical report and an itemised invoice with the doctor's licence number. Check your policy: reimbursement is decided by your insurer.
How much does it cost?
The video appointment costs €50 for 15 minutes, with appointments every day from 07:30 to 20:30 (Spain time). Any medicine prescribed is paid separately at the pharmacy, at its full private price.
