Common Symptoms

Most smokers want to stop, and most need a few tries. People often book because:

  • They have tried to stop on their own and started again
  • Cravings, irritability or poor sleep made the last attempt hard
  • They want to know which treatments work and which are safe for them
  • They are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or have a new baby
  • They have a health condition such as asthma, COPD, diabetes or high blood pressure
  • They want to stop vaping or using nicotine pouches

Nicotine is highly addictive, so stopping is hard, and it is not a lack of willpower. Using treatment together with support roughly doubles or triples your chance of success compared with willpower alone. Every attempt teaches you something for the next one.

How We Treat It

In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo asks how much you smoke, how soon after waking you smoke, past attempts, your health, medicines and mood. Care may include:

  • A personal quit plan with a quit date and ways to handle triggers
  • Advice on nicotine replacement (patches, gum, lozenges, spray), which is sold in Spanish pharmacies without a prescription, including how to combine a patch with a fast-acting product
  • Prescription stop-smoking medicines where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation
  • A check of medicines whose dose may need adjusting when you stop smoking
  • Follow-up appointments in the first weeks, when relapse is most likely
  • Information on free public stop-smoking services in your region

Some stop-smoking medicines are not suitable with certain health conditions, such as seizures, some heart conditions or eating disorders, or in pregnancy. The doctor goes through this before any prescription. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law.

Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Stop Smoking Support

During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.

Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law

When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.

Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement

After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.

Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation

Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.

Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary

Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.

When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care

Get urgent care, or call 112, if you have:

  • Chest pain or pressure, or sudden shortness of breath
  • A seizure (fit)
  • Sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, or trouble speaking
  • Severe low mood, agitation or thoughts of harming yourself while taking a stop-smoking medicine (stop it and get help now)
  • Coughing up blood

Frequently asked questions

What is the most effective way to stop smoking?

Combining a stop-smoking medicine or nicotine replacement with regular support works best. Using a nicotine patch together with a fast-acting product such as gum or a spray is more effective than either alone.

Are stop-smoking tablets available in Spain?

Yes. Some stop-smoking medicines need a prescription in Spain, and some are part-funded by the public health system with a public prescription. With a private prescription you pay the pharmacy price. The doctor will tell you whether one suits you. No prescription is promised.

Can I use nicotine replacement in pregnancy?

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your baby. If you cannot stop without help, nicotine replacement is much safer than smoking. Talk to a doctor or midwife about the best plan.

Will I put on weight if I stop?

Some people gain a few kilos, but the health benefits of stopping are far greater. Regular meals, activity and planning for cravings help. Some treatments also reduce weight gain in the first months.

Do e-cigarettes help people stop?

Some people use them to stop, but they are not risk free and Spanish health authorities do not recommend them as a treatment. If you vape, the aim should be to stop both smoking and vaping. The doctor can help with both.
