Common Symptoms
Contraception questions do not stop when you move or travel. People often book because:
- They are running out of their pill, patch or ring in Spain
- Their usual brand has a different name in Spanish pharmacies
- They want to start contraception or switch to another method
- They have side effects such as spotting, headaches or mood changes
- They want to delay a period for a holiday or an event
- They are thinking about a coil (IUD) or an implant and want advice first
Choosing contraception is personal. The right method depends on your health, your plans and what you find easy to use. You deserve clear, unhurried advice without judgement, in a language you are comfortable with.
You don't have to figure this out alone
Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera is an independent, bilingual GP licensed in Spain. Book a 15-minute video consultation in English or Spanish for €50, with a private electronic prescription issued under Spanish law when clinically appropriate.
How We Treat It
In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo asks about your health, periods, migraines, smoking, medicines and family history of blood clots. He asks for a recent blood pressure reading and your weight; most pharmacies in Spain check blood pressure. Care may include:
- A review of every method: combined pill, progestogen-only pill, patch, ring, injection, coil (IUD) and implant
- A check of safety for you, using the international medical eligibility criteria
- Help finding the Spanish equivalent of the method you used at home
- A prescription where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation
- Advice on periods, missed pills, vomiting and interactions with other medicines
- Options to delay a period, if suitable for you
- Referral for a coil or implant fitting, which needs an in-person visit
The emergency (morning-after) pill is sold in Spanish pharmacies without a prescription and works best the sooner it is taken; do not wait for an appointment. A coil or implant must be fitted in person. Contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections; condoms do. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law.
Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Contraception Consultation Online
During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.
Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law
When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.
Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement
After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.
Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation
Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.
Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary
Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.
When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care
Stop hormonal contraception and get urgent care, or call 112, if you have:
- Chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood
- Pain, swelling or redness in one calf or thigh
- A sudden, severe headache, or a migraine with new aura (flashing lights or zigzags), weakness or trouble speaking
- Sudden loss or blurring of vision
- Yellow skin or eyes
- Severe pain low in the tummy with a missed period or a positive pregnancy test
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my contraceptive pill prescribed online in Spain?
Often, yes. If the method is safe for you after a video review, a private electronic prescription can be issued that pharmacies in Spain accept. You need a recent blood pressure reading for methods that contain oestrogen. No prescription is promised.
Is my pill from home available in Spain?
Most common pills have a Spanish version, sometimes under another brand name. Bring the box or a photo of the ingredients and strength. The doctor will find the closest match or suggest a suitable alternative.
Where do I get the morning-after pill in Spain?
Any pharmacy, without a prescription. Ask for the 'píldora del día después'. It works better the sooner it is taken. A copper coil fitted within five days is the most effective emergency option and needs an in-person visit.
Can I delay my period for a holiday?
Often, yes. If you use a combined pill, patch or ring, you may be able to skip the break. If not, a short course of another medicine may suit some people. Book a few weeks before your trip so there is time to plan safely.
Who should avoid the combined pill?
It is usually not suitable if you have migraine with aura, are 35 or older and smoke, have high blood pressure, have had a blood clot, or recently had a baby. Progestogen-only methods, the coil and the implant are often safe alternatives.
