Common Symptoms
Menopause usually happens between 45 and 55, and symptoms often start years before periods stop. Common symptoms include:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Periods that become irregular, heavier or lighter
- Poor sleep, tiredness and brain fog
- Low mood, anxiety or irritability
- Vaginal dryness, pain during sex or more urine infections
- Joint aches and lower sex drive
Menopause symptoms can affect work, sleep and relationships, and many women put up with them for years. Help is available. You can talk through your options with a doctor who listens and explains the evidence in plain language.
You don't have to figure this out alone
Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera is an independent, bilingual GP licensed in Spain. Book a 15-minute video consultation in English or Spanish for €50, with a private electronic prescription issued under Spanish law when clinically appropriate.
How We Treat It
In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo asks about your symptoms, periods, health history, medicines and family history of breast cancer, blood clots and heart disease. He asks for a recent blood pressure reading. Care may include:
- A diagnosis based on your age and symptoms. Over 45, blood tests are usually not needed
- A balanced talk about hormone replacement therapy (HRT): benefits, risks and the different types, such as patches, gels and tablets
- Vaginal oestrogen for dryness and urinary symptoms, which is low risk for most women
- Non-hormonal options when HRT is not suitable or not wanted
- A prescription where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation
- Advice on sleep, mood, bone health, exercise and breast and cervical screening
- Regular reviews, and referral to gynaecology when needed
A video visit cannot replace a pelvic or breast examination. Women under 40 with menopause symptoms need tests and specialist care. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law.
Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Menopause Treatment
During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.
Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law
When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.
Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement
After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.
Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation
Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.
Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary
Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.
When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care
See a doctor in person promptly, or call 112 in an emergency, if you have:
- Any vaginal bleeding a year or more after your last period
- Bleeding between periods or after sex that keeps happening, or very heavy bleeding
- A new breast lump, nipple discharge or skin changes on the breast
- Pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain or sudden shortness of breath (stop HRT and call 112)
- Severe low mood or thoughts of harming yourself
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a blood test to confirm menopause?
Usually not if you are over 45 and have typical symptoms. Hormone levels change from day to day in perimenopause, so a single test can mislead. Tests are useful under 45, and are needed under 40.
Is HRT safe?
For most healthy women under 60, or within ten years of menopause, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks. Patches and gels do not raise the risk of blood clots the way tablets can. Combined HRT slightly raises the risk of breast cancer with longer use. The doctor goes through your own risks with you.
Can I get HRT prescribed online in Spain?
If HRT is suitable for you after a video review, a private electronic prescription can be issued that pharmacies in Spain accept. If you already use HRT from another country, bring the name and strength so the closest Spanish product can be found. No prescription is promised.
What if I cannot take HRT?
There are non-hormonal medicines that reduce hot flushes, and talking therapies such as CBT help with flushes, sleep and mood. Vaginal moisturisers and lubricants help with dryness. The doctor will explain what suits you.
What about perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the time before periods stop. Symptoms can be strong even while you still have periods. HRT and other treatments can be used in perimenopause, and you still need contraception until periods have stopped for long enough.
