Common Symptoms
Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) cause no symptoms at all, so testing matters. When symptoms appear, they can include:
- Burning or pain when passing urine
- Unusual discharge from the vagina, penis or bottom
- Sores, blisters, ulcers or warts on the genitals or around the mouth
- Itching or irritation in the genital area
- Pain during sex, or bleeding after sex or between periods
- Pain or swelling in the testicles, or pain low in the tummy
Worrying about an STI is stressful, and it can feel hard to talk about, especially in another language. STIs are common and most are easy to treat. You will get private, respectful care, and your information stays confidential.
You don't have to figure this out alone
Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera is an independent, bilingual GP licensed in Spain. Book a 15-minute video consultation in English or Spanish for €50, with a private electronic prescription issued under Spanish law when clinically appropriate.
How We Treat It
In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo asks about your symptoms, recent partners, protection used, travel, pregnancy and allergies. Care may include:
- A review of your symptoms and your risk, and which infections to test for
- A private request for tests (urine or swabs, and blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis) at a lab near you, or advice on free public STI clinics
- Treatment of some infections where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation
- Advice on telling partners and when it is safe to have sex again
- A test of cure or a repeat test when guidelines advise it
- Information on prevention, including condoms, vaccines and PrEP pathways
- Referral for in-person care when an examination or an injection is needed
Some infections, such as gonorrhoea, are treated with an injection and need an in-person visit. Genital sores and lumps often need to be examined. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law.
Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Sexual Health and STI Advice Online
During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.
Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law
When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.
Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement
After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.
Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation
Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.
Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary
Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.
When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care
Do not wait for a video visit. Go to an emergency department now if:
- You may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours: emergency medicine (PEP) works best within 24 hours and is given in hospital emergency departments
- You have sudden, severe pain in a testicle, with or without swelling
- You have severe pain low in the tummy with fever, or with a missed period
- You are pregnant and have new genital sores or unusual discharge
- You have been sexually assaulted: emergency services can give urgent care and support (call 112)
Frequently asked questions
Can I get tested for STIs in Spain without a health card?
Yes. Private labs carry out STI tests with a private request, and many cities have public STI clinics that test free of charge. HIV self-tests are sold in Spanish pharmacies. The doctor can tell you which option suits you.
Can STIs be treated online?
Some, yes. If tests confirm an infection such as chlamydia, a private electronic prescription can be issued where clinically appropriate. Infections that need an injection, and sores or lumps that need examining, need an in-person visit.
When should I test after unprotected sex?
It depends on the infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests are reliable from about two weeks. Blood tests for HIV and syphilis may need repeating up to 6 to 12 weeks later. The doctor will give you a clear timeline.
Do I need to tell my partners?
Yes, for most infections, so they can be tested and treated and you are not reinfected. The doctor can explain how to do this, and public clinics can help notify partners anonymously.
Where can I read more?
Our guide on PrEP in Spain explains how HIV prevention medicine is accessed and what a GP visit can help with.
What are genital warts, and are they caused by HPV?
Yes. Genital warts are caused by low-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). They are painless skin-coloured bumps and are treated with creams or freezing. Other, high-risk HPV types do not cause warts but can change the cells of the cervix, which is why cervical screening matters. The HPV vaccine protects against both.
Is a wart on my back a sexually transmitted infection?
No. Lumps on the back are usually seborrhoeic keratoses, skin tags or common warts, none of which are sexually transmitted. Any spot or mole that changes in size, shape or colour, or bleeds, should be checked.
