Common Symptoms

Hair loss is very common in both men and women, and the cause decides the treatment. People usually notice:

  • A receding hairline or thinning on the crown
  • A wider parting or less volume on top of the head
  • More hair than usual on the pillow, in the shower or in the brush
  • Shedding that started two to three months after an illness, surgery, childbirth or a stressful event
  • Round, smooth bald patches
  • Thinning together with tiredness, heavy periods or weight change

Losing hair can knock your confidence, and it is easy to waste money on products that do not work. Many types of hair loss can be slowed, and some get better on their own once the cause is found. A calm review helps you choose a plan based on evidence, not adverts.

How We Treat It

In your video consultation, Dr. Yelamo asks when the hair loss started, its pattern and your family history. He also asks about illness, diet, periods, pregnancy, stress and medicines, and looks at photos of your scalp. Care may include:

  • Working out the likely type, such as pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), shedding after a trigger (telogen effluvium) or patchy hair loss
  • Blood tests when they help, such as iron, thyroid or vitamin D, at a lab near you
  • Advice on proven treatments. Topical minoxidil is sold in Spanish pharmacies without a prescription
  • Prescription treatment where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation, with a clear talk about benefits and possible side effects
  • Realistic expectations: most treatments take three to six months to show an effect and work only while you use them
  • Referral to dermatology for patchy, scarring or unusual hair loss, or when first treatments do not help

Some hair loss medicines can affect mood or sexual function, and some must not be used in pregnancy or when trying for a baby. These points are discussed before any treatment. Hair transplants and cosmetic procedures are not offered. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines. Any prescription is a private electronic prescription under Spanish law.

Clinical Evaluation & Evidence-Based Protocol for Hair Loss Treatment

During a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera (licensed medical practitioner No. 484814280 at the Official Medical College of Bizkaia), clinical evaluation adheres strictly to evidence-based medical (EBM) standards. The doctor conducts a thorough history, evaluating symptom duration, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and drug allergies to establish an accurate differential diagnosis.

Private Electronic Prescriptions (Receta Médica) Issued Under Spanish Law

When clinically indicated, Dr. Yelamo issues a private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Electrónica Privada) under Spanish law. The digital prescription contains a secure QR verification code accepted at all 22,000+ registered community pharmacies across Spain for immediate medication dispensing.

Itemized Invoices for Travel & Private Health Insurance Reimbursement

After your consultation, you receive an official medical report and an itemized invoice. The invoice shows Dr. Yelamo's licence details and tax ID. You can send it to your travel or private health insurer (such as Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, AXA or a US travel policy) to claim the cost back.

Preparing for Your Online Medical Consultation

Before your appointment, note when your symptoms started and any medicines you have already tried. Have your allergies and your usual prescriptions to hand. For a skin, rash or eye problem, sit in a well-lit room so the doctor can see it clearly.

Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary

Video care works well for common infections, mild sudden symptoms, skin rashes and repeat prescriptions. Some warning signs need emergency care in person: severe shortness of breath, a high fever you cannot bring down, chest pain or a stiff neck. If you have any of them, call 112 in Spain straight away.

When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care

See a doctor in person promptly if you have:

  • Hair loss with a red, scaly, painful or weeping scalp, or pus
  • Patches where the skin looks shiny or scarred
  • Sudden hair loss all over the body, including eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Hair loss with fever, weight loss or night sweats
  • In women, hair loss with a deeper voice, fast-growing body hair or periods that have stopped
  • Low mood, anxiety or thoughts of harming yourself while taking a hair loss medicine (stop it and get help now; in an emergency call 112)

Frequently asked questions

What causes hair loss?

The most common cause is pattern hair loss, which runs in families. Other causes include shedding two to three months after illness, childbirth or stress, low iron, thyroid problems, some medicines and patchy hair loss (alopecia areata). The pattern and timing usually point to the cause.

Can hair loss be treated online?

Yes, in most cases. Photos of your scalp, your history and blood tests are usually enough to decide on first steps. Patchy, scarring or unusual hair loss needs a dermatologist to examine the scalp.

Does minoxidil work?

For pattern hair loss, topical minoxidil has good evidence in men and women. It slows hair loss and can thicken hair in some people. It can cause shedding in the first weeks, and the effect fades if you stop. Your doctor can tell you whether it suits you.

Do I need blood tests?

Not always. Tests help when hair loss is sudden or diffuse, in women, or when you have other symptoms. Common tests are ferritin (iron stores), thyroid function and vitamin D. Biotin supplements can upset some lab results, so mention them.

Is hair loss after having a baby normal?

Yes. Shedding often starts two to four months after birth and usually settles within a year. If it lasts longer, or comes with tiredness or low mood, book a review to check iron, thyroid and mood.

Where can I read more?

Our guides on minoxidil in Spain and on dutasteride and finasteride for hair loss explain how these treatments work, their possible side effects and what to ask your doctor.
