Is a cold sore contagious?
Yes, from the first tingle until it has fully healed. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, such as kissing, and through saliva, especially while blisters are present. Avoid kissing and sharing lip products during an active outbreak. Never kiss a baby while you have a cold sore: neonatal herpes is rare but very dangerous.
Can I have oral sex if I have a cold sore?
No. Avoid oral sex until the cold sore has completely healed. The virus can spread to your partner's genitals and cause genital herpes.
How do I stop a cold sore spreading to another part of my body?
Do not touch the sore, except to dab on cream, and wash your hands each time you do. Keep your hands away from your eyes, as the same virus can infect the eye.

See a doctor if the sore has not started to heal within 10 days or is very large or painful. Also see one if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system or get cold sores very often.
