Clinical Follow-Up & When In-Person Urgencias Are Necessary

When to Seek Immediate In-Person Care
Stop and get urgent care (call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department) if you have:
- Severe, constant pain in the upper belly, often spreading to the back (possible pancreatitis)
- Pain in the upper right belly with fever, or yellow skin or eyes (possible gallbladder problem)
- Vomiting or diarrhoea that stops you keeping fluids down, with very little urine or dizziness
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing
- Shaking, sweating or confusion if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea (possible low blood sugar)
- Sudden loss of vision, or eyesight that worsens quickly
- A positive pregnancy test: stop the injection and contact your doctor
Frequently asked questions
What are GLP-1 weight-loss injections?
Doctors call them GLP-1 receptor agonists: medicines that copy a gut hormone called GLP-1. They help you feel full sooner and help control blood sugar. Tirzepatide also acts on a second gut hormone, GIP. They include semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic), tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and liraglutide (Saxenda). All need a prescription in Spain.
Is Ozempic approved for weight loss in Spain?
Ozempic is authorised for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy contains the same molecule, semaglutide, and is authorised for weight management. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is authorised for both. The right medicine depends on your diagnosis and is decided in the medical assessment.
Are weight-loss injections funded by Spain's public health system?
Not for weight loss. The public system funds semaglutide (Ozempic) only for some adults with type 2 diabetes. The rules are a BMI of 30 or more, use with other diabetes medicines, and prior approval (visado). Wegovy and Mounjaro are not publicly funded (as of October 2026). We found no change in the price committee's papers up to September 2026. With a private prescription, you pay the full pharmacy price. Ask your pharmacy for the current amount.
Can you buy Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro in a Spanish pharmacy?
Yes, with a prescription. They should only come from a pharmacy. In Spain, prescription medicines cannot be sold online. Pens sold on social media, in gyms or second-hand may be fake, badly stored or contain a different substance.
Can GLP-1 therapy be started online in Spain?
It can be assessed by video in a Weight Optimization consultation. A prescription is considered only where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation. It must also be legal to prescribe. Some people need a physical exam or specialist care first, and the doctor will tell you.
What happens if I stop the injections?
Weight often comes back after stopping, as trials show on average. Talk to your doctor before you stop. A plan for eating, activity and follow-up appointments helps.
Can I restart a GLP-1 medicine after missing doses?
Do not restart at your old dose without advice. After a break, this can cause strong sickness and dehydration. The right step depends on the medicine, how long you stopped and your symptoms.
Are GLP-1 medicines suitable for everyone?
No. They are not used in pregnancy. Some people need extra care or should not use them. This includes past pancreatitis, some thyroid cancers, a very slow stomach or an eating disorder.
Can I continue GLP-1 treatment I started in the UK or US after moving to Spain?
Often, after a review. Bring the name of the medicine, when you started, the stage of treatment you are at, your starting and current weight, and recent blood tests. A doctor licensed in Spain then decides whether continuing is safe and suitable for you and, if so, issues a private prescription. Prescriptions from the UK or US cannot be dispensed in Spain, so plan the switch before you run out.
Wegovy or Mounjaro: which one, and where do I get it in Spain?
There is no single right answer. Both are prescription-only weekly injections used for weight management. They work in different ways and suit different people. The choice depends on your health, your other medicines, side effects and cost, and is made with a doctor after an assessment. In Spain you need a prescription from a licensed doctor, and you collect the pen at a pharmacy.
