Augmentine is amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, known elsewhere as Augmentin or co-amoxiclav. What it treats and why it needs a prescription in Spain.

Augmentine is amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, known elsewhere as Augmentin or co-amoxiclav.
- What it is used for: bacterial infections such as some sinus and ear infections, dental, skin, urinary and chest infections. It does not help flu, colds or most sore throats, which are viral.
- Common side effects: diarrhoea, nausea and thrush.
- Check first if: you are allergic to penicillin, have had liver problems with this antibiotic or take blood thinners.
- Do you need a prescription? Yes. Antibiotics are not sold over the counter in Spain. Take it at the start of meals and finish the course prescribed.
- Seek urgent care if: you get a rash with breathing difficulty or swollen lips, severe or bloody diarrhoea, or yellow skin.
