Wegovy is a prescription medicine that contains semaglutide, a copy of a gut hormone called GLP-1. In the European Union it is licensed for weight management in adults with obesity, or with overweight and a health problem linked to weight, and in teenagers with obesity. It is always used alongside diet and exercise.

TL;DR
  • Wegovy is semaglutide, the same molecule as Ozempic, but licensed for weight management.
  • It needs a prescription, and the Spanish public health system does not fund it for obesity.
  • Spain only sells the injection pen: the tablets are licensed in the EU but not yet on sale here.
  • In an emergency, call 112.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is the brand name of semaglutide for weight management. It acts like GLP-1, the hormone your gut releases when you eat: you feel full sooner and less hungry. See how GLP-1 weight-loss medicines work.

What is Wegovy used for?

According to its product information, Wegovy is for weight management, which means losing weight and keeping it off, together with a lower-calorie diet and more exercise. It is licensed for:

  • adults with a BMI of 30 or more (obesity);
  • adults with a BMI from 27 to under 30 and at least one health problem linked to weight, such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea or heart disease;
  • teenagers from 12 years old with obesity, on the terms in the product information.

A doctor also looks at your general health and your blood tests before treatment.

Wegovy vs Ozempic: what is the difference?

Both contain semaglutide, but they are licensed for different uses. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes in adults; Wegovy is licensed for weight management. Each has its own pens and dosing plans, so they are not interchangeable: a doctor decides any switch. Never use two GLP-1 medicines at once, and Wegovy does not replace insulin.

Do you need a prescription for Wegovy in Spain?

Yes. In CIMA, the database of the Spanish medicines agency (AEMPS), Wegovy is listed as prescription-only. A pharmacy will only hand it over with a valid prescription. In Spain, prescription medicines may not be sold online, so a website selling Wegovy is breaking the law.

Is Wegovy covered by the Spanish public health system?

No. At the time of writing, the Spanish National Health System (SNS) does not fund Wegovy for weight management. The government committee that sets medicine prices proposed not to include it because of its high cost to the public budget. Even with a Spanish health card, you pay for it yourself.

How much does Wegovy cost in Spain?

Because it is not funded, you pay the full price at the pharmacy, which depends on the pen your doctor prescribes. Ask your pharmacy. Very cheap offers online or on social media are a typical sign of an illegal product.

Is the Wegovy pill available in Spain?

It exists, but it is not on sale in Spain yet. The European Commission licensed Wegovy tablets for adults in July 2026, for the same use. In CIMA the tablets are listed as licensed but not marketed. Today, Spanish pharmacies only stock the injection pen. If someone offers you the tablets in Spain, be suspicious.

Wegovy side effects

The most common side effects affect the gut: feeling sick, being sick, diarrhoea, constipation and tummy pain. Headache and tiredness are also very common. They mostly happen at the start and when the dose goes up, and usually settle with time.

Other common ones are dizziness, reflux, wind and gallstones. Rare but serious ones are pancreatitis, severe allergic reactions, a blocked bowel and painless loss of sight in one eye (NAION). Vomiting and diarrhoea can dry you out and harm the kidneys, so drink enough fluids. More tips in weight-loss injection side effects.

Do you regain weight after stopping Wegovy?

Yes, this is common. In trials, people who stopped Wegovy put weight back on, and the European Medicines Agency notes that treatment must continue to keep the result. Do not stop or restart it on your own: plan it with your doctor. See stopping weight-loss medication.

Who should not use Wegovy

  • People allergic to semaglutide or any of its ingredients.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use contraception during treatment; if you plan a pregnancy, the leaflet says to stop at least two months before.
  • Anyone already using another GLP-1 medicine.

Check with a doctor first if you…

  • have diabetes and use insulin or other medicines that lower blood sugar;
  • have diabetic eye disease (retinopathy);
  • have severe kidney, liver or heart disease;
  • have a slow-emptying stomach (gastroparesis);
  • are due to have surgery under general anaesthesia or deep sedation.

Fake Wegovy: how to stay safe

The AEMPS has warned about fake pens and illegal products sold as GLP-1 medicines, which may contain harmful substances. The only safe route is a prescription and a pharmacy. Learn how to check your pen in counterfeit weight-loss pens in Spain.

When to call 112

  • Very severe tummy pain that does not stop and may spread to the back, with or without vomiting.
  • Trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
  • Sudden loss of sight in one eye.
  • A swollen, painful tummy with vomiting, when you cannot pass wind or stools.

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy

Are Wegovy and Ozempic the same?

They share the same active ingredient, but Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for weight management. Do not swap them on your own.

Can you buy Wegovy without a prescription in Spain?

No. Only a pharmacy can supply it, with a prescription, and prescription medicines may not be sold online in Spain.

How much weight do you lose on Wegovy in a month?

There is no fixed figure. Weight loss is gradual, varies a lot between people, and trials measure it over more than a year.

I started Wegovy in another country. Can I continue in Spain?

Bring your records and the name of the product you use. A doctor licensed in Spain will review your health and decide what is right for you here.
