Paracetamol is the same medicine as acetaminophen, known in the US as Tylenol. It relieves pain and fever and is not an anti-inflammatory.
- What it is used for: mild to moderate pain and fever. It is usually the first choice when anti-inflammatories are not suitable.
- The main risk: too much damages the liver, most often by unknowingly combining several products that contain it, such as cold and flu remedies.
- Check first if: you have liver disease, drink alcohol daily or have a very low body weight.
- Do you need a prescription? Some packs are sold without one and others need a prescription.
- Go to an emergency department if: you think you have taken more than directed, even if you feel well; symptoms can be delayed.
This is general information and does not replace the package leaflet or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. If you need an assessment, you can book a video consultation or read about flu. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care; in an emergency, call 112.
