You will not find Lotrimin in Spain under that name. Ask for clotrimazole (clotrimazol), sold here as Canesten, Gine-Canesten and Canespie. Some packs need a prescription. This guide is by Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera, an English-speaking GP licensed in Spain (Colegiado No. 484814280) who sees patients by video in English and Spanish.

In short

  • Lotrimin is a US brand. In Spain, ask for clotrimazol or the Canesten range.
  • Prescription status depends on the pack. Read the box for sin receta or con receta.
  • It treats fungal infections of the skin and vaginal thrush (yeast infection).
  • Creams used near the genitals can damage latex condoms and diaphragms.

What is Lotrimin or Canesten called in Spain?

The ingredient is the same everywhere: clotrimazole. In Spanish it is clotrimazol. Canesten is a Bayer brand, so you will see it in Spanish pharmacies. The vaginal range is called Gine-Canestén. Canespie is a cream for athlete's foot.

Lotrimin is not a Spanish brand. Check your US box before you shop. Some Lotrimin products hold a different antifungal. Lotrisone mixes clotrimazole with a steroid, betamethasone.

Useful words on the box:

  • Crema: cream for the skin.
  • Crema vaginal: cream for inside the vagina.
  • Comprimido vaginal: vaginal tablet (pessary).
  • Polvo cutáneo: skin powder.
  • Sin receta: no prescription needed.

Do you need a prescription for clotrimazole in Spain?

It depends on the pack. The Spanish medicines database, CIMA, lists many clotrimazole products. Their rules differ:

TypeExamples in SpainPrescription?
Vaginal tablets and creamGine-Canestén rangeMost packs no
Foot creamCanespieNo
Skin cream and powderSome Canesten packsSome yes
Clotrimazole with a steroidCombination creamsYes

Your pharmacist can tell you which pack you can buy freely. Our medicines in Spain guide explains how pharmacy rules work here.

What is clotrimazole used for?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal. It kills the fungus or yeast causing the infection. The NHS lists these uses:

  • Athlete's foot.
  • Ringworm and jock itch.
  • Rash in skin folds (intertrigo).
  • Infected nappy rash.
  • Vaginal thrush, and thrush on the penis.

It does not treat bacterial infections. It also does not treat a sexually transmitted infection. Our yeast infection page explains how thrush is assessed.

Who should not use clotrimazole, and what are the warnings?

The Spanish leaflets say not to use it if you are allergic to clotrimazole or similar antifungals (imidazoles). Stop and get help if you get an itchy, raised rash or swelling.

  • Latex: creams near the genitals can weaken condoms and diaphragms. Use another method during treatment.
  • Pregnancy: the Spanish vaginal leaflet allows use only under a health professional's supervision. Speak to a doctor or midwife first.
  • Breastfeeding: clotrimazole can be used. If you put it on the nipple, wash it off before feeding.
  • Children: Gine-Canestén is not for children under 12. Canespie is used under 12 only with medical advice.
  • Side effects: mild burning, itching or redness where you apply it.

Use it only for the time the leaflet says. Overuse can let fungi become resistant.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor before self-treating if:

  • It is your first vaginal yeast infection.
  • You have fever, chills or lower belly pain.
  • The discharge smells bad or has blood in it.
  • You have sores, blisters or ulcers in the genital area.
  • You are pregnant, or treating a child.
  • Thrush keeps coming back, or you have diabetes or low immunity.

The Canespie leaflet says to see a doctor if athlete's foot gets worse, or is not better after 10 days.

Can I use my UK or US prescription in Spain?

In practice, no. Spanish pharmacies refuse foreign prescriptions, including those from the UK and the US. For a prescription-only pack, a doctor licensed in Spain must issue a Spanish private electronic prescription. That only happens where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canesten the same in Spain as in the UK?

The ingredient, clotrimazole, is the same. Pack names, forms and prescription rules can differ. Read the Spanish box and ask the pharmacist.

Can I buy thrush treatment without a prescription in Spain?

Most Gine-Canestén vaginal packs are sold without one. See a doctor first if it is your first episode, you are pregnant or symptoms are unusual.

What is the Spanish equivalent of Lotrimin?

Ask for clotrimazol. Canespie cream is for athlete's foot. Some Canesten skin packs need a prescription.

Can children use clotrimazole?

Vaginal products are not for under-12s. For skin infections in children, ask a doctor or pharmacist first.

In an emergency, call 112.

Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion, where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation.
