You will not find Claritin or Clarityn in Spain under those names. Ask for loratadine (loratadina) instead. The Spanish brand is Clarityne. Some packs are sold without a prescription, but others need one. This guide is by Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera, an English-speaking GP licensed in Spain (Colegiado No. 484814280) who sees patients by video in English and Spanish.
In short
- At a Spanish pharmacy (farmacia), ask for loratadina or the brand Clarityne.
- The small Clarityne pack is sold without a prescription. Many generic loratadina packs need one.
- Clarityne Plus also contains pseudoephedrine, like US Claritin-D. It is not safe for everyone.
- In practice, Spanish pharmacies do not accept UK or US prescriptions.
What is Claritin called in Spain?
Claritin (US) and Clarityn (UK) are brand names for loratadine. In Spain, the same medicine is sold as Clarityne. It is also sold as a generic. Generic boxes say loratadina, followed by the maker's name. CIMA, the Spanish medicines database, lists several of these generics.
Look for these words on the box:
- Loratadina: loratadine.
- Antihistamínico: antihistamine.
- Comprimidos: tablets. Jarabe: syrup.
- Sin receta: no prescription needed.
Clarityne Plus is a different product. It combines loratadine with pseudoephedrine, a decongestant. It is the closest match to US Claritin-D.
Do you need a prescription for loratadine in Spain?
It depends on the pack. The small Clarityne pack is sold without a prescription. Many generic loratadina packs are prescription-only. Each box shows which rule applies. Your pharmacist can tell you which packs they stock. Clarityne Plus is also sold without a prescription, but its decongestant comes with extra warnings. Our guide to medicines in Spain explains how these rules work.
What is loratadine used for?
Loratadine is an antihistamine. It blocks histamine, a substance your body releases during an allergic reaction. MedlinePlus says it relieves hay fever and other allergy symptoms:
- Sneezing and a runny nose.
- An itchy nose or throat.
- Red, itchy or watery eyes.
It is also used for the itching and redness of hives. MedlinePlus warns against using it on some hives. These include hives that are bruised, blistered, an unusual colour or not itchy. Loratadine is called a non-drowsy antihistamine. Even so, the NHS lists sleepiness as a common side effect. Our allergy care page covers hay fever and hives.
Who should not take loratadine?
Do not take it if you have ever been allergic to loratadine or anything else in the product. The NHS advises checking with a doctor or pharmacist first if you:
- Have severe liver failure.
- Have epilepsy, or another condition that puts you at risk of seizures (fits).
- Are allergic to food additives.
- Have an allergy test booked. Loratadine can affect the results, so you may need to stop a few days before.
The Spanish Clarityne tablets contain lactose. Tell the pharmacist if you have a sugar intolerance. Also tell them about all your other medicines. Do not take two antihistamines together unless a doctor tells you to. If you take Clarityne Plus, do not take other decongestants or cold remedies with it. Its pseudoephedrine is not safe with severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Can I take loratadine if I am pregnant or breastfeeding, or give it to children?
Advice differs between countries. The NHS says you can take loratadine in pregnancy, but check with a pharmacist or doctor first. It calls loratadine one of the best antihistamines to use while breastfeeding. The Spanish Clarityne leaflet is more cautious. It says to avoid it in pregnancy as a precaution. It also says not to take it while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a doctor before you start.
The Spanish Clarityne leaflet does not recommend it for children under 2. Some generic leaflets set a higher minimum age. Tablets are not right for every child, and loratadine also comes as a syrup. Never give an adult product to a child without reading the leaflet or asking a pharmacist.
When should I see a doctor?
See a doctor today if your symptoms do not improve or keep coming back. Also see one if you are not sure it is an allergy. Hay fever can look like a cold or a sinus infection. Hives that come with a fever, joint pain or bruising also need a doctor to check them.
Call 112 if your lips, tongue or throat swell, you struggle to breathe, or you feel faint. Loratadine does not treat a severe allergic reaction. MedlinePlus says not to use it in place of an adrenaline (epinephrine) injector.
Can I use my UK or US prescription in Spain?
In practice, no. Spanish pharmacies refuse foreign prescriptions, including ones from the UK and the US. A prescription-only pack needs a Spanish private electronic prescription. Only a doctor licensed in Spain can issue one. It is never guaranteed. It is issued only where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation.
