Buscapina is hyoscine butylbromide, sold in many countries as Buscopan. It relaxes the muscles of the gut and urinary tract.
- What it is used for: abdominal cramps and spasms, colic and cramping period pain.
- Check first if: you have glaucoma, prostate problems with difficulty passing urine, myasthenia or a fast heart rhythm. It can cause a dry mouth and blurred vision.
- Do you need a prescription? Plain Buscapina is sold without a prescription. Buscapina Compositum also contains metamizole and does need one.
- See a doctor if: abdominal pain is severe or lasts more than 24 to 48 hours, or you have fever, repeated vomiting, blood in the stool or a hard abdomen.
