Living in or visiting Las Palmas? Here is where to go if you feel unwell.
A sore throat can make it hard to eat, sleep or talk. It is harder when you do not know the local system. This page explains when a video visit with Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera can help, when you should go in person, and where to go in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Can an online visit help?
You can request an online consultation with an English-speaking doctor. The doctor will determine whether online treatment is suitable or whether an in-person assessment is required.
Common symptoms
Getting medical advice abroad can be stressful, more so when you do not speak the language at the pharmacy. A sore throat may cause:
- Throat pain or irritation
- Pain when swallowing
- Red or swollen tonsils
- Fever
- Swollen neck glands
- Hoarseness
- A cough, or a runny or blocked nose
What the doctor can do by video
In your video consultation, the doctor asks how long you have had symptoms and whether you have a fever. He also asks about contact with people who are ill, your health conditions, your medicines and any warning signs. Treatment may include:
- Advice on rest, plenty of fluids and simple ways to soothe a sore throat
- Advice on pain relief that suits you
- A check for strep throat, using a simple score from NICE guidance (FeverPAIN or Centor)
- Antibiotics only when clinically justified or confirmed by a test
- Referral for an in-person throat exam or test when needed
Most sore throats do not need antibiotics. They help little and can cause side effects. Online care is not suitable if there are signs of a blocked airway, severe dehydration or a serious infection.
When to go in person or call 112
A video visit is for urgent, non-emergency care. If you have any of the signs below, do not wait for a video visit: go to a hospital emergency department (urgencias) or call 112.
Seek urgent medical attention if you have:
- Trouble breathing, or you cannot swallow your own saliva
- Drooling, severe neck swelling, or a muffled voice
- A high-pitched sound when you breathe in
- Severe pain on one side of the throat, or trouble opening your mouth
- Signs of dehydration, such as passing little or dark urine
- Severe weakness, confusion, or symptoms that get worse quickly
- A weakened immune system with signs of a significant infection
In a life-threatening emergency, call 112. It is free, works from any phone in Spain, and you can ask for English.
