The morning after pill is emergency contraception that lowers the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your usual method failed. In Spain you can buy it at any pharmacy without a prescription.

Quick Answer

Question Answer
Do I need a prescription in Spain? No. It is sold over the counter.
What types are there? Levonorgestrel (up to 72 hours after sex) and ulipristal acetate (up to 120 hours after).
When should I take it? As soon as possible.
What do I ask for? "La píldora del día después" at any farmacia.
Is there a more effective option? A copper IUD fitted within 5 days, at a clinic.

How It Works

It mainly works by delaying ovulation. It does not end an established pregnancy. The sooner you take it, the better it works.

How to Take It

  1. Ask at the pharmacy. The pharmacist may ask a few questions to recommend the right one.
  2. Take it as soon as possible, with or without food.
  3. If you vomit within 3 hours, ask for advice, as you may need another dose.
  4. Use condoms until your next period.

When It May Work Less Well

  • If many hours have passed since sex.
  • If you take certain medicines, such as some epilepsy, tuberculosis or HIV treatments, or St John's wort. Mention them at the pharmacy.
  • Levonorgestrel may be less effective at higher body weight. The pharmacist or a doctor can advise you.

Afterwards

  • Your period may come a few days early or late.
  • If it is more than a week late, take a pregnancy test.
  • Severe abdominal pain needs a doctor without delay.
  • If there was a risk of a sexually transmitted infection, consider testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take it more than once?

Yes, but it is not a regular method of contraception. A doctor can help you choose one; see our guide to birth control refills in Spain.

Does it affect future fertility?

No.
