Minoxidil is the most widely used treatment for hereditary hair loss. Abroad the lotion is sold as Regaine or Rogaine.
- What it is used for: male and female pattern hair loss. It slows shedding and can restore some density.
- What to expect: results take three to six months and are lost if you stop. Shedding can increase briefly in the first weeks.
- Forms: the solution or foam is applied to the scalp. Oral minoxidil has to be assessed and prescribed by a doctor.
- Check first if: you have heart disease or low blood pressure, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Keep it away from children and pets.
- Do you need a prescription? The scalp product is sold without one in Spanish pharmacies; the tablets need one.
- See a doctor if: hair loss is sudden or patchy, the scalp is very itchy or scaly, or you get palpitations, dizziness or swelling on the tablets.
