What is Condrosan used for?
The Spanish leaflet says Condrosan is for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (tratamiento sintomático de la artrosis). Osteoarthritis is the common "wear and tear" joint problem. It often affects knees, hips and hands. It causes pain, stiffness after rest and a joint that feels less free.
Chondroitin is a natural part of cartilage, the smooth layer that covers the ends of bones. Condrosan does not rebuild a worn joint. The aim is to ease pain and stiffness. It works slowly, and the product information says the effect can last for some weeks after it is stopped.
It comes as hard capsules. The doctor and the leaflet set how much to take and for how long.
Is chondroitin sulfate a medicine or a supplement?
It depends on the country. That is why visitors are often surprised in a Spanish pharmacy.
| Product | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Condrosan | Chondroitin sulfate capsules | Spain: prescription medicine |
| Condrosulf, Condrodin, generic chondroitin sulfate | Chondroitin sulfate capsules | Spain: prescription medicine |
| Droglican | Glucosamine with chondroitin | Spain: prescription medicine |
| Chondroitin or glucosamine with chondroitin | Dietary supplement | US and UK: sold without a prescription |
A licensed medicine has been checked for quality and content. Supplements are not tested the same way, so the amount in each product can vary. There is no UK or US prescription medicine that matches Condrosan.
Does chondroitin work for joint pain?
The honest answer is that the research is mixed.
- The US National Institutes of Health (NCCIH) says it is still unclear whether glucosamine and chondroitin help knee osteoarthritis. Some studies found a benefit, but the results were not consistent.
- It is also unclear whether chondroitin protects the joint itself.
- Expert guidelines disagree. Some advise against it for the knee. A European group supports prescription-grade chondroitin sulfate.
- The NHS says there is no strong evidence that it works, and GPs there no longer prescribe it.
Exercise, weight loss if needed and simple pain relief remain the basis of care. A doctor can help you decide whether a trial of chondroitin makes sense for you. Our joint pain page explains what a doctor checks.
Do you need a prescription for Condrosan in Spain?
Yes. Condrosan hard capsules are listed as medicamento sujeto a prescripción médica on the AEMPS CIMA database. So are the other chondroitin sulfate capsules sold as medicines in Spain. See our guide to which medicines need a prescription in Spain.
Knee, hip or hand pain that is slowing you down?
You can book a video visit with a GP licensed in Spain, in English or Spanish. He looks at your joint pain and your other medicines, and talks you through the options.
Who should not take Condrosan?
- People allergic to chondroitin sulfate or any part of the capsule.
- Children and young people under 18: the leaflet does not advise it, as there is not enough data.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the leaflet says not to take it.
- Serious kidney, liver or heart disease: talk to your doctor first. Very rarely it has caused fluid build-up in people with heart or kidney failure.
Can I take Condrosan with blood thinners?
The leaflet says that, at doses well above those advised, it could slightly increase the effect of medicines that stop platelets sticking, such as aspirin or clopidogrel. The NIH notes a link between glucosamine and chondroitin and a higher risk of bleeding in people taking warfarin. If you take any blood thinner, tell the doctor before you start.
What Condrosan does not treat
- Gout, which causes sudden, very painful attacks. See our gout page.
- Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory joint diseases.
- An injury, such as a sprain or a torn ligament.
- A joint infection. This is an emergency.
Side effects and warning signs
Side effects are rare. The leaflet lists nausea and stomach upset, which do not usually mean you must stop. Very rarely it lists swelling from fluid and allergic reactions. See a doctor if:
- Pain wakes you at night or keeps getting worse.
- A joint gives way or locks.
- You notice ankle swelling or breathlessness that is new.
- Pain comes with weight loss or feeling unwell.
Get urgent care the same day for a hot, red, swollen joint with fever. It may be an infection that can damage the joint quickly. Call 112 if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing.
Talking it through with a doctor by video
Dr. Yelamo is a GP licensed in Spain. He sees adults, children and pregnant patients by video, every day from 07:30 to 20:30 (Spain time). In the visit he will:
- Ask where it hurts, when it started and what makes it better or worse.
- Look for signs of infection, gout or injury that need an in-person exam.
- Go through exercise, weight and pain relief options.
- Check your other medicines, including blood thinners.
He does not promise any test or prescription before the visit. Where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines.
A prescription is never guaranteed: it is issued only where clinically appropriate after a genuine evaluation, as a private electronic prescription under Spanish law. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care. In an emergency, call 112.
See how the Urgent Care video visit works. It lasts 15 minutes and costs €50.
