Bilaxten has been prescribed for your allergy and you are wondering why it has to be taken on an empty stomach, whether it makes you sleepy, and whether it is the same bilastine you know from other countries. These are common questions, and understanding them means it works better.
Bilaxten is the Spanish brand of bilastine, a second-generation antihistamine that rarely causes drowsiness. It is sold in the UK as Ilaxten and is not marketed in the US.
- What it is used for: allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose and eyes) and hives. It is not for colds or other causes of congestion.
- How to take it: on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food, and never with fruit juice or tea: food and juice reduce its absorption and its effect. Water is the best company.
- Possible effects: headache and, in a few people, some drowsiness.
- Check first if: you have kidney disease, take ketoconazole or erythromycin, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do you need a prescription? Yes in Spain. If you travel, carry the box and prescription, because it is sold under other names abroad.
- Go to an emergency department if: you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or severe dizziness: that may be a severe allergic reaction, not a simple itch.
If allergies are stopping you living normally, or the antihistamines you buy are not enough, an online consultation can assess your case and, where clinically appropriate and following a genuine evaluation, guide you on the right treatment. You can book a video consultation or read about allergies. This is general information and does not replace the package leaflet or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care; in an emergency, call 112.
