Sumatriptan is a triptan: a medicine specific to migraine, different from ibuprofen or paracetamol.
- What it is used for: relieving a migraine attack that has already started, with or without aura, once a doctor has established the diagnosis of migraine.
- What it does not do: it does not prevent migraine and it does not treat other headaches, such as tension-type headache.
- Check first if: you have heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure or hemiplegic migraine, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do you need a prescription? Yes: in Spain sumatriptan is only dispensed with a prescription.
- Go to an emergency department (112) if: you have the worst headache of your life, fever, fainting, weakness or speech problems: these can be signs of something serious.
This is general information and does not replace the package leaflet or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. If you need an assessment, you can book a video consultation or read about migraine. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care; in an emergency, call 112.
