Mycostatin is the Spanish brand of nystatin, an antifungal liquid for Candida yeast infections of the mouth and gut. It is used most often for oral thrush: white patches on a sore, red tongue or cheeks. It works on the surface and barely enters the blood. In Spain it needs a prescription.
- Mycostatin (nystatin) treats Candida yeast in the mouth and gut, such as oral thrush.
- It is a liquid with a measuring syringe, and it needs a prescription in Spain.
- Hold it in the mouth as long as you can before swallowing, and finish the course.
- Thrush that keeps coming back, or pain when swallowing, needs a doctor to look for the cause.

What is Mycostatin used for?
The leaflet lists infections of the mouth and gut caused by Candida, a yeast. Small amounts of Candida live in everyone's mouth. Thrush starts when it overgrows. In the mouth you may see:
- White or creamy patches on the tongue, gums or inside the cheeks.
- Red, sore skin under the patches, which may bleed a little if wiped.
- Cracks at the corners of the mouth, a bad taste, or pain when eating.
In Spain, Mycostatin comes as one liquid (suspensión oral) with a dosing syringe. The doctor or the leaflet tells you how much to use and for how long. It is not for yeast infections spread through the whole body.
Who gets oral thrush?
MedlinePlus and the NHS name the same groups again and again:
- Babies, mainly in the first months. You may see a white coating on the tongue, and the baby may not want to feed.
- People with dentures, more so if they fit badly or are worn at night.
- People who use a steroid inhaler for asthma or COPD. See our asthma page.
- People who have just taken antibiotics, which kill the good bacteria that keep yeast down.
- People with diabetes, mainly when blood sugar runs high, and people with a weak immune system.
How to take it so it works
- Shake the bottle well each time and use the syringe in the pack.
- For thrush in the mouth, keep the liquid in the mouth as long as you can, then swallow.
- For babies, the leaflet says to put half on each side of the mouth.
- It can be mixed with water or a soft, non-acidic food or drink, such as milk.
- Keep going until the end of the course, even if the mouth looks better sooner.
- Once opened, keep it below 25 °C and throw it away after 7 days.
Good mouth care helps too. The NHS advises cleaning dentures well, taking them out at night and seeing a dentist regularly.
Nystatin outside Spain: is there a UK or US version?
| Name | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Mycostatin | Nystatin liquid for the mouth | Spain (prescription) |
| Nystan | Nystatin liquid for the mouth | UK (prescription only) |
| Generic nystatin | Nystatin liquid; the Mycostatin and Nilstat brands have stopped | US |
The medicine is the same in each country, but packs and strengths can differ. Bring the box or a photo of it, and the doctor can match it.
Do you need a prescription for Mycostatin in Spain?
Yes. Mycostatin is listed as medicamento sujeto a prescripción médica on the AEMPS CIMA database. A pharmacist can only give it with a prescription.
White patches in your mouth, or your baby's, that will not clear?
You can book a video visit with a GP licensed in Spain, in English or Spanish. He looks at the mouth on camera, asks about the likely cause and explains the next step.
Thrush and breastfeeding: what about the nipples?
If a breastfed baby has oral thrush, the yeast can pass to the mother's nipples. Nipple thrush often causes new pain in both nipples after feeds, when feeding was not painful before. NHS guidance says mother and baby should be treated at the same time, so it does not pass back and forth. The mother is usually given a cream for the nipples. Mycostatin liquid is for the baby's mouth, not for the nipple. You can carry on breastfeeding during treatment.
What Mycostatin does not treat
- Vaginal thrush. That is treated with other products. See our yeast infection page.
- Fungal skin or nail infections. See the fungal skin infection page.
- A sore throat from a virus or bacteria. White spots on the tonsils are often pus, not thrush. Our sore throat page explains the difference.
- Yeast in the blood or organs. That needs hospital care.
When does thrush need more checks?
A single bout in a baby, a denture wearer or after antibiotics is common. It is worth looking further when:
- Thrush keeps coming back, or does not clear with treatment.
- An adult gets it with no clear cause, such as an inhaler, antibiotics or dentures.
- You also feel very thirsty, pass more urine or lose weight. A blood test for diabetes may help; see our diabetes page.
- You have HIV, have chemotherapy or take medicines that lower your immunity.
Side effects and red flags
Most people have no side effects. Some feel sick, vomit, or get an upset stomach or diarrhoea. A rash or hives can happen. The liquid contains sugar (sucrose), which matters in diabetes, a very small amount of alcohol, and parabens, which can cause allergy. See a doctor if:
- It hurts to swallow, or food feels stuck. The yeast may have spread down the gullet.
- You have a fever with the thrush.
- A baby under 4 months has thrush, or a baby is feeding much less.
- There is no improvement after 14 days, as the leaflet says.
Call 112 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing, or a rash with blisters and peeling skin. These are rare signs of a serious allergy.
Talking it through with a doctor by video
Dr. Yelamo is a GP licensed in Spain. He sees adults, children and pregnant patients by video, every day from 07:30 to 20:30 (Spain time). In the visit he will:
- Look inside the mouth on camera and ask how long it has been there.
- Ask about inhalers, antibiotics, dentures, diabetes and feeding.
- Check for signs that need tests or an in-person exam.
- Explain which treatment fits, for you or your baby.
He does not promise any test or prescription before the visit. Where clinically appropriate, following a genuine evaluation. Treatment and prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion based on evidence-based clinical guidelines.
A prescription is never guaranteed: it is issued only where clinically appropriate after a genuine evaluation, as a private electronic prescription under Spanish law. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care. In an emergency, call 112.
See how the Urgent Care video visit works. It lasts 15 minutes and costs €50.
