If you have tried acne treatments for years without success, you have probably heard of isotretinoin. It is normal to have questions: it is an effective medicine, but it also requires close medical follow-up.
What it is: isotretinoin is a vitamin A-derived medicine, available only on prescription, used for moderate or severe acne when other treatments have not worked or have left scars.
- What you can expect: in many cases it reduces acne substantially during treatment and often keeps it controlled afterwards; results vary and are decided by the medical team supervising it.
- Do you need a prescription? Yes: in Spain it is only dispensed with a prescription and a scheduled follow-up plan, usually with periodic blood tests.
- The most important risk: it can cause severe harm to a developing foetus. Anyone taking it must not become pregnant during treatment or in the months that follow, according to the doctor's instructions, and effective contraception is used.
- Effects to watch for: dry skin and lips, sun sensitivity, dry eyes, and mood changes. Any significant change in mood is reported to the doctor immediately.
- When to seek assessment: if your acne is leaving scars, is not responding to other treatments, or is affecting your wellbeing — a medical assessment can plan the right path, which may include referral to a dermatologist.
A video consultation with an English-speaking doctor lets a physician review your case unhurriedly, explain the options and refer you to the right specialist if isotretinoin is the treatment your case calls for, where clinically appropriate following a genuine evaluation. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care; in an emergency, call 112.
