Hidroxil is a Spanish medicine that prevents and treats low levels of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 in adults and teenagers from 14, for example with a poor diet or while recovering from illness. The tablets hold thiamine, pyridoxine and cyanocobalamin. It does not prevent or cure a hangover. This guide is by Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera, an English-speaking GP licensed in Spain (Colegiado No. 484814280) who sees patients by video in English and Spanish.
- Hidroxil B1-B6-B12 is a medicine by Almirall with three B vitamins: thiamine (B1), pyridoxine (B6) and cyanocobalamin (B12).
- Its Spanish product information says it prevents and treats a lack of these vitamins.
- It is for adults and teenagers from 14. Children under 14 must not take it.
- Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney or liver failure, or take levodopa.
- High doses of vitamin B6, or taking it for a long time, can harm the nerves.
- There is no proof it helps a hangover. Heavy drinking is a medical problem, not a lack you fix with tablets.
What is Hidroxil used for?
The Spanish product information says Hidroxil prevents and treats a lack of vitamins B1, B6 and B12. It gives a poor diet and recovery from illness as examples. It also mentions some back pain linked to that lack.
So it makes sense when you are short of one of these vitamins. If you eat a varied diet and your blood tests are normal, extra B vitamins usually add nothing.
What is in Hidroxil?
- Vitamin B1 (thiamine): helps turn food into energy and keeps nerves working.
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): helps the body use protein and supports the nervous system.
- Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin): needed to make red blood cells and for the nerves.
The tablets are pink because they contain the colour carmine (E-120). The numbers on the box are not a dose. The leaflet or your doctor sets the dose.
In English: what is the equivalent?
Hidroxil is a Spanish brand. In the UK and the US you find vitamin B complex products, or B1, B6 and B12 sold on their own. Strengths differ, so do not swap one for another without checking. At a Spanish pharmacy, ask for Hidroxil or vitaminas B1, B6 y B12.
Does Hidroxil help back pain or sciatica?
Only when the pain is linked to a lack of these vitamins, says the product information. For everyday back pain or sciatica it is not a substitute for seeing a doctor. If pain runs down your leg, or you have tingling or weakness, get checked.
Does Hidroxil work for a hangover?
There is no proof that B vitamins prevent or cure a hangover. A hangover comes from alcohol and losing fluid, and only time sorts it out. Water, food and rest help.
It is true that heavy drinking over time can cause a lack of thiamine (B1). That can harm the brain and nerves. It is a medical problem for a doctor, not something to treat with a pharmacy tablet alone.
Do you need a prescription for Hidroxil in Spain?
No. In Spain it is sold in pharmacies without a prescription. It is still a medicine, so read the leaflet and ask the pharmacist. It is meant for short use. If you need it for longer than the leaflet says, a doctor should decide.
Who should not take Hidroxil?
The product information says not to take it if you:
- are allergic to any of these vitamins, to cobalt or to another ingredient;
- take levodopa for Parkinson's disease, as vitamin B6 weakens its effect;
- have Leber's optic atrophy or sight loss linked to tobacco;
- have kidney failure or liver failure;
- are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- are under 14.
What should you watch out for?
- Nerves: high doses of vitamin B6, or long use, can cause nerve damage, with tingling or numb hands and feet.
- Anaemia: vitamin B12 should not be given for anaemia before the cause is known, because it can hide a lack of folic acid.
- Sun: it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so protect yourself from UV rays.
- Blood tests: tell the lab you take vitamins. B12 can show up high. Read about high vitamin B12 results.
What are the side effects?
They are not common. They include headache, tingling, drowsiness, feeling sick, being sick or a skin rash. Your urine may change colour, which is harmless. Stop it and get advice if tingling lasts or you have an allergic reaction.
How do I know if I am low in vitamin B12?
A blood test tells you. Signs of low B12 are tiredness, pale skin, tingling, mouth ulcers or memory problems. Risk is higher in older people, vegans, people who take metformin or omeprazole for years, and people with stomach or gut problems. A confirmed lack sometimes needs injections, not tablets.
When to see a doctor
- Tiredness, pale skin or breathlessness with no clear reason.
- Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet.
- Back pain that runs down your leg, with weakness.
- You drink alcohol every day or find it hard to stop.
When to call 112
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing after taking it.
- Confusion, unsteady walking or double vision in someone who drinks heavily.
- Weakness on one side of the body or trouble speaking.

What dose of Hidroxil should I take?
The leaflet or your doctor sets the dose and how long to take it. Ask your pharmacist.
