Valtrex is sold in Spain under the same name, and generic valaciclovir is sold by many makers. Both need a Spanish prescription. The US spelling is valacyclovir. This guide is by Dr. Pedro Yelamo Vera, an English-speaking GP licensed in Spain (Colegiado No. 484814280) who sees patients by video in English and Spanish.
In short
- Valtrex is listed on CIMA, the Spanish medicines database. Generic valaciclovir is listed too.
- Every valaciclovir product in Spain needs a prescription.
- It treats shingles, cold sores and genital herpes. It does not cure herpes.
- For shingles, the NHS says treatment usually needs to start within 3 days of the rash.
What is Valtrex called in Spain?
It has the same name. CIMA is run by AEMPS, the Spanish medicines agency. It lists Valtrex film-coated tablets. It also lists many generics. Their boxes say Valaciclovir, the maker's name and "EFG". EFG is the Spanish mark for a generic.
Examples include Valaciclovir Teva, Aristo, Almus, Kern Pharma and Aurovitas. They all have the same active ingredient as Valtrex. If the brand is out of stock, ask for valaciclovir.
Do you need a prescription for valaciclovir in Spain?
Yes. In Spain, valaciclovir is prescription-only (medicamento sujeto a prescripción médica). The pharmacy cannot sell it to you without one. It is also prescription-only in the UK and the US.
Useful words at the pharmacy:
- Receta: prescription.
- Receta electrónica privada: private electronic prescription.
- Herpes zóster: shingles.
- Calenturas or herpes labial: cold sores.
What is valaciclovir used for?
Valaciclovir is an antiviral medicine. The Spanish leaflets list these uses:
- Shingles (herpes zóster) in adults.
- Cold sores in adults and teenagers over 12.
- Herpes infections of the skin, including genital herpes.
- Helping stop herpes from coming back.
- Some eye infections.
- Preventing a virus called CMV after an organ transplant.
MedlinePlus explains that it does not cure herpes. It eases pain and itching. It helps sores heal and stops new ones from forming. It does not treat colds or flu. Our shingles care page explains how a video visit works for this rash.
A painful rash on one side of your body?
You can book a video visit with a GP licensed in Spain, in English or Spanish. He checks your rash, your health and your other medicines first.
Who should not take valaciclovir?
Do not take it if you are allergic to valaciclovir or aciclovir. Tell the doctor first if you:
- Have kidney or liver problems.
- Are over 65.
- Have a weak immune system, HIV or an organ transplant.
- Take other medicines that can affect the kidneys.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The kidneys clear this medicine from the body. If yours work less well, the doctor may change your treatment. Drink enough water through the day.
Rarely, it can cause confusion, agitation or hallucinations. Spanish leaflets say this mostly affects older people, people with kidney problems and transplant patients. A serious skin reaction called DRESS has also been reported. Signs include a widespread rash, fever and swollen glands. Stop the medicine and get help today if you notice them.
It can affect your driving. Do not drive until you know how it affects you.
Can children and pregnant women take it?
Valaciclovir is mainly used in adults and teenagers over 12. The Spanish product information says its safety under 12 has not been proven. A doctor decides what is right for a child with chickenpox or herpes. In pregnancy, the doctor weighs the benefits and risks for you and your baby. NHS specialist pharmacists say it can be used while breastfeeding.
When should you see a doctor?
With shingles, timing matters. The NHS says you usually need to start medicine within 3 days of the rash appearing. If you think you have shingles, see a doctor today.
Go to urgencias today if:
- The rash is on your face or near your eye.
- Your vision changes.
- You have a weak immune system and a new rash.
- You feel very unwell, with a spreading rash or a high fever.
Some medicines for shingles nerve pain are gabapentinoids. These controlled medicines are never prescribed online.
Call 112 if you get swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing, a fit or sudden confusion.
Can I use my UK or US prescription in Spain?
In practice, no. Spanish pharmacies refuse foreign prescriptions, including UK and US ones. A doctor licensed in Spain has to issue a Spanish private electronic prescription. Bring your old box or prescription to the visit. It shows the doctor what you took before. Our guide to medicines in Spain explains how pharmacies work here.
