Omeprazol is omeprazole, known elsewhere as Losec or Prilosec. It reduces stomach acid.
- What it is used for: reflux and heartburn, stomach or duodenal ulcers, treating Helicobacter pylori together with antibiotics, and protecting the stomach in at-risk people who take anti-inflammatories.
- How to take it: before breakfast, as directed on the pack or by your doctor.
- Long-term use: it can lower vitamin B12 and magnesium, so the need for it should be reviewed from time to time.
- Do you need a prescription? Small packs for occasional heartburn are sold without one; larger packs need a prescription. See omeprazole in Spain: over the counter or prescription for the details.
- See a doctor if: you have difficulty swallowing, weight loss, repeated vomiting, black stools or symptoms that do not settle.
This is general information and does not replace the package leaflet or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. If you need an assessment, you can book a video consultation or read about acid reflux. This service is for urgent, non-emergency care; in an emergency, call 112.
